Chatty Karis

Karis loves to talk on the phone. I will be talking to someone and she will come up and "ask" to talk on the phone. Although, she seems to think that if I'm on the phone it must be with her daddy. I give her the phone and she gets this intent look on her face. She listens quietly but will say words she knows if you ask her too.

Sometimes when I'm driving, and talking to Andy on the cell, I'll give the phone to her. She talks to him. Answers questions he asks until he tells her to give the phone to Mommy. She then dutifully hands the phone back to me. I can only imagine how it is going to be when she starts actually holding conversations. I won't be able to get a word in edgewise!

Scuffy, a McConnell family tradition

When I was pregnant with Karis, Andy went online to ebay and found a book that his father read to him when he was a little boy. Scuffy the Tugboat was Andy's favorite book when he was a little boy. I'm told that his father read this book to Andy ad nauseum. So this weekend we had Grandma & Grandpa over for a visit and I got the book out and had Karis take it to her Grandpa. He immediately began laughing. He and Andy's mom reminisced about how he could at one time almost recite the book from memory. He then lifted Karis up onto his lap and continued the tradition of Scuffy...

Bathing Beauty

We have a little pool set up on the back deck for Karis to play with. I fill it up in the morning and then let it sit all day to warm up. We usually go out and play in it after her nap. The first couple of times it took a little convincing to get her to stay in the pool and sit down. She still likes to climb in and out of it better than just sit there and play. She especially likes it when I turn on the hose a little bit and let her play with the watering wand. We have learned to keep shoes on her because everytime she gets on the deck barefoot, she ends up with splinters in the bottom of her feet and toes. Daddy is the official splinter surgeon in this house.

I have a bunch of 4" plastic azalea pots that she loves to throw in the pool. Then she pulls them out and throws them in again. I look forward to getting a membership to the YMCA and taking her in a real swimming pool. I had planned on doing that this winter but my foot surgery sidelined that idea!

Mother's Day 2005

Today is Mother's Day, and I insisted we take Andy's mom out for brunch to celebrate. After a nice meal we drove her home and I told them I wanted a picture of them with Karis, a kind of 3 generation photo. They complied and I took this picture. I wish I had insisted on a photo of Karis and I as well. Many people have remarked on how much Karis looks lke her daddy. And several have said she looks like her grandmother as well. What do you think?

Sometimes it sucks to be the one who takes most of the pictures in the family. Andy just doesn't think to take photos of me, much less Karis and me together. So there aren't very many photos of me with my daughter in comparison to those of Karis and her daddy.

I need to get more proactive about handing him the camera and asking to take pictures of us...

The Prettiest "May Flower"

Spring has definately sprung here in KY. The trees are blooming and the spring bulbs are beautiful. It just makes you want to get out of the house and start gardening. I went to a local nursery the other day. I wasn't impressed with their current offerings. They basically had Pansies, Petunias, Dusty Miller, and Snapdragons.

I asked why they didn't have anything else and they looked at me like I was crazy and said that it was too early. I do hope the selection gets better as the summer comes. I like to see a little variety, things that every Tom, Dick and Harry don't have in their yard... I miss Mulhalls in NE!

Karis and Water table

One morning Andy was sitting in front of my computer eating breakfast and surfing through the parenting site I was on. He saw a thread on a toy that people were raving about that was on sale. It was a sand and water table. He showed it to me and I though Karis would like it.

He came home with it that afternoon and put it together for her. She LOVED it! She filled the little pither up with water and poured it all over the deck and herself. It also has a water wheel that turns when you pour water over it. We showed her how to do it. She tried her best, but most of the water left the pitcher before it got high enough to pour into the wheel. I see many hours of wetness in my future.
