A Disaster is Afoot...
This photo and entry is a compilation written and taken covering a 10 week period...
In early January I missed a step coming downstairs early one Sabbath morning. I came down very hard on my right foot, felt an explosion of pain and crumpled to the floor. I cried out to Andy and by the time he got to the bottom of the stairs, about 30 seconds, my foot had swelled before my very eyes. We took a trip to the ER, nightmare of an ER, and they said it was broken. I was referred to an orthopedist that monday who said it wasn't broken but that I had torn some ligaments. He put me in an orthopedic boot and sent me on my merry way for 4 weeks.
Early Feburary I saw the orthopedist again who now diagnosed me with a LisFranc Injury. He said I needed surgery, a foot pinning. I had that done on the 8th. I had an ankle block for anesthesia and got to be awake for the procedure since I was about 5 weeks pregnant. I was told I was to be totally non-weight bearing for 8-12 weeks. 8-10 weeks of chasing after a toddler who can't be depended on to obey when told to "come here". Oh so much fun.
It turned out to be 10 weeks and I survived by renting a wheelchair and crawling around the upper floor of our house. I did go a little stir crazy though. It is hard to rely on other people so much. It's hard to only be able to go out when someone else can take you. The pins were removed April 18th in the Doctor's office with some glorified pliers. Oh, and wasn't that a treat! The Doc tells me I could have swelling for up to a year.
Karis got used to going straight upstairs when I said "Let's go change your pants". She and I ascended and descended the stairs the same way. She loved to ride on my lap in the wheelchair, but especially loved to ride on my lap in Walmart when I drove the motorized chair with the basket to go grocery shopping. She really was a trooper and it would have been a much rougher 10 weeks if we didn't have such a good-natured little one.
